Shopify SEO Audit Checklist: Technical, On-Page and AI Search

Printed analytics report on a desk

Shopify handles a lot of SEO basics for you, which is precisely why the problems that remain are easy to miss. This checklist works through them in priority order.

How to Use This Checklist

Work top to bottom — crawling and indexation problems make everything below them irrelevant. Record findings in a sheet with issue, URLs affected, impact, effort and owner. An audit that does not name an owner does not get fixed.

Crawl and Indexation

  • Check the Pages report in Search Console for what is indexed versus excluded, and why
  • Confirm your sitemap is reachable and reflects live products and collections
  • Review your robots file — on Shopify this is editable through a Liquid template, and Shopify's defaults are sensible, so change them deliberately rather than wholesale
  • Consider noindexing genuinely thin templates
  • Check your .myshopify.com domain and any password-protected staging store are not indexed
  • If you sell internationally, confirm your market and language configuration produces correct alternate-language annotations

Duplicate Content and Canonicals

Shopify can expose the same product at several URLs. Summary here, full detail in the duplicate content guide.

Architecture and Internal Linking

Collections are your commercial hubs — they should be reachable in as few clicks as possible and linked from relevant blog content. Check for orphan products reachable only through search, add breadcrumbs, and use related-product links to distribute authority through the catalogue.

On-Page

  • Title and meta description templates that produce distinct, useful text per page, with manual overrides for priority pages
  • Duplicate H1s — some themes output both a hidden logo heading and a page heading
  • URL handles that are readable and stable; changing them later costs you redirects
  • Alt text on meaningful images

Collection and Product Content

Covered in collection page SEO and product page optimization.

Structured Data

See product schema. The common failure is two conflicting product blocks — one from the theme, one from a reviews app.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

See Core Web Vitals. Part of page experience, and a conversion issue regardless.

AI Search Readiness

See AI search visibility. Increasingly a distinct discovery channel with its own requirements.

Blog Content and Cannibalisation

Check whether a blog post and a collection are competing for the same query. If they are, decide which should win, and make the other link to it rather than compete with it. This is one of the most common problems on stores that have published consistently for a year or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I audit?

Fully once or twice a year, with a crawl-and-index check quarterly.

Which tools do I need?

Search Console, a desktop crawler, and your analytics. Everything else is optional.

Can I edit robots.txt on Shopify?

Yes, through a Liquid template rather than a static file. Keep Shopify's defaults unless you have a specific reason.

Is Shopify bad for SEO?

No. It has some fixed URL conventions to work around, which this checklist covers.

How long until fixes show results?

Indexation changes can appear within weeks; ranking movement usually takes longer.
